Mathematics at Westmoor Primary Information

More images to come.

In accordance with the National Curriculum and the Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage, each year group follows a prescribed programme of study with a daily mathematics lesson. There is an emphasis on mental calculation leading to standard written methods at later stages. The daily lesson may include oral work and mental calculation, an independent activity and direct teaching with an opportunity for children to feedback on their learning.

In Early Years, practical experiences and opportunities enable high quality exploration; essential concepts and skills are taught progressively for success in future mathematics. Developing a strong grounding in number is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically.

Understanding of mathematical concepts is vital and therefore practical, problem-solving and investigative approaches are taught. Children are encouraged to discuss methods used to answer questions. We ensure that the children have an awareness of the uses of mathematics beyond the classroom and relate mathematics tasks to everyday life. We aim to maintain and increase every child's confidence in mathematics and develop their appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics.
